|While at Yale University, Mr. Boylen was involved with the Yale Dramat. He studied Anglo-Irish Literature for a year at UCD College, Dublin, Ireland, where he was involved with the Dramatic Society. Finally realizing the intensity of a theater calling, he took a MFA degree in design and committed himself to a career in Theater. Mr. Boylen has designed extensively for regional theater including Goodspeed Opera House, McCarter Theatre, Philadelphia Drama Guild, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Pennsylvania Ballet, The Prince Music Theater, GeVa, The Whole Theatre, The Arden, Hedgerow and InterAct in Philadelphia.
Mr. Boylen also spent a great deal of time working with John Allen at (New) Freedom Theatre-Philadelphia.
Of late Mr. Boylen has taken to directing, most recently a production of "Hamlet" for the department. Related to this interest, he has twice taken the LaMaMa International Symposium for Directors in Umbria and also The SITI Company intensive at Saratoga Springs.
He has served as Head of the departmental Design Program and as Chairman of the Department 2003-2006.
Theater, like life, is learned in the doing of it. In design, less can very well be more.
